Bill Gates is no celebrity, but he’s famous for being a successful entrepreneur, author, and philanthropist. He’s best known for being the co-founder, former chairman, and CEO of Microsoft, where he earned his huge fortune. However, he later decided to sell billions of dollars worth of his Microsoft shares and invest them in Cascade Investment LLC, which he uses to invest in hundreds of other companies.

This probably helps Gates maintain his riches. Though he’s no longer the wealthiest person in the world, he has been consistently in the top five. It may be enough for him to hold the record for much of the period between 1997 and 2008, and he still has $113 billion of net worth to his name today.
